My younger brother is graduating from high school and is heading off to college in the fall. He needs a laptop and I honestly don't know what get. He's not a gamer so he won't need anything super powerful. There is about $700-$1,000 budgeted for this gift. Any advice? | ||

Hate to say it... but apparently Mac is the shit for college students. You could get him a little hp netbook, then spend the left over and buy a new gun. | ||

Yeah, if you get him a MAC see if you can get it with an Intel proc so that, if needed, you have the option to run a dual boot with a Windows OS. | ||

Well this isn't my money Unsung but that's a good idea. I have a serious issue with picking out a mac but then again it would get me off the hook as tech support lol. He's not computer savvy at all so I'm thinking something basic would do just fine. This looked pretty good. [-link-] |

make sure you buy extended 3 year warranty for whatever laptop u choose. stick with name brand laptop to get better support. i'd say compare prices and features...u will probably get better price for amd cpu laptop. if he is not a gamer then video card shouldn't matter. | ||

You can get a very nice Acer model from newegg for an excellent price and save lots of money. I've got one that's 3 years old now and is still in top condition. Most companies build laptops to last around 3 years, short living parts, ya know, but I've got to hand it to Acer for making this one long lasting. OS is up to you, but I like Win 7 on my new gaming rig. It's the bees knees :P I have Vista on my laptop though. | ||

What about an Asus EEE? Insane battery life on them. [-link-] It'll do all the basic stuff and when he graduates college he won't have to teach himself an additional OS (if you did get him a mac) because Macs are not used in any business I know except music with any regularity. He will have to get past some learning curve but it's easier when you don't have Mac habits getting in the way. Hell any kind of "Netbook" is a slimmed down notebook...it' ll go anywhere he wants to go. And be mindful of the OS's they come with; some still ship with windows XP or *garghs* Vista. Avoid Dell. The key things to remember with a notebook are battery life, size (screen), weight, and the presence of bloatware (hence avoid dell). Find the specs you want. And then make sure he has a good amount of battery life, can fit in a backpack or notebook backpack, has respectable screen space to help avoid eyestrain. Give him a mouse to use too if you like. Also remember you can't change the OS on a notebook...so make sure it's windows 7. That Lenny is a good choice btw but that battery life won't last him more than 3 or maybe 4 classes unless he's got a charger (which he might forget to pack or whatever, it's just another thing to keep up with) Edited Sun May 16 2010, 08:32AM |

I don't think any of them have anything but Intel processors now which is nice. Used to IBM made their CPU chips...that is no longer the case. And the dual boot option (I think it's called boot camp) is still in beta last I knew =( |
