Alright, so I've spent the past month or so trying to figure out what I want to do for this thing and I think I've found everything that I want. I just wanted to get some opinions on what your guys thought before I order everything. Mafia 2 is coming out soon and I want to have this thing done or at least on it's way here when the game comes out, which is the 24th. I'm open to any suggestions or advice. Make sure you invest in a very good surge protector. I'd hate to think you went all out on the video card and went skimpy on the surge protector and it gets fried during a storm. Protect all that stuff :) | ||

just to add to what fast said. I use this one: [-link-] I've had it for a few years, battery still keeps a good charge, keeps up my dual LCDs, PC, modem, router going during power outages. I'm not sure if SLI is worth it, say you get 50fps with one card, you won't get 100 if you have two. You won't get double the performance, so is it really cost effective? Plus, video card memory doesn't get doubled in SLI, so say each card has 1gb of memory, you still just have 1gb available in SLI, not 2gb. Another thing about SLI, games are buggy with it, when I look at the forums, I see numerous posts on people having to disable one card because the game crashes with SLI. The quality of games these days, SLI isn't exactly bug free. Moving on to SSD, I personally don't think they are worth the money. yeah, windows will boot super quick, but win7 already boots like 5x faster than XP. Games already load quick with enough ram, how much quicker can they be with a SSD? 15 seconds to load into a game on a regular HD, vs. 9 seconds on a SSD. If you really want SSD, it'd probably be better cost wise to get a 120gb, and then a 1tb drive for storage. You might want to get a fan controller for that case. sunbeam makes good stuff. with the money you save by not getting that $600 SSD, get a second LCD monitor. Switching to dual monitors is almost like going from a CRT to a LCD. Its so nice to have TS, email, and IM up on the second monitor, while playing or web browsing. Plus with my photography, my lightroom workflow goes much quicker because of my second monitor. Edited Sun Aug 15 2010, 07:28PM |

I tell you I don't know how Asus ever got off the ground...I've probably gone through 8 boards of theirs and each one was a living nightmare to get working. If you want to save some money Mooch/Lotus, I'd stay away from Asus, get the ASRock X58 Extreme3 mobo instead [-link-] ...They aren't well known but both me and my brother swear by them...same features and a lot less money spent, I'd honestly say better craftsmanship too...The only problem was my Driver disc didn't work...but that is attributed to my media drive and not the disc. I still was able to function without and found some updates on their website. Just make sure you pick ram that is certified to work with it. List is on their website, . Their boards all support the new processors out of the box so folks who complained they couldn't use a i7 930 are outdated reviews on newegg. I currently run with this, double wide spacing on the PCI-E slots allows for a discrete sound card solution even with SLI or Crossfire in the mix. You won't get that with any other board maker. Kinda important for me since I use SLI and a sound card =P You can if you want to use a previous chipset cooling solution, they put extra holes into the board to allow for it...but considering how cheap the CM Hyper 212+ cooler is and managing to get 4ghz stable on it (yes that's air cooling only and a $20 cooler at that - sadly BC2 starts to rubberband after 3Ghz) I don't see the need...but it is a nice feature for those oh shit moments and you only have an older cooler. Seriously if you don't believe just look at some websites reviewing it...save your money and splurge it elsewhere. If you want to know more about it from someone who actually uses it I'd be happy to speak more about it. [-link-] this is the one without eSATA3, SATA3, and USB 3.0. Use this model for checking out ram that's certified to work...same board in every other way. I went with some G.SKill ripsaws...great company btw. Sorry I am on a soapbox, I simply don't trust their motherboards anymore...every board has it's QC issues I understand that, but theirs are too expensive to have the number of issues I had...I eventually got all of them work. But I got tired of the frustration. I do not hold the same opinion for their sound cards...they sound great...and work. Much more then I can say for the X-Fi series and the crippled drivers made to force you to buy the next new model. Creative lost my support after it was revealed they disabled vista support on cards and insinuated you had to upgrade. I posted a link about Daniel_K the guy who found this deception.
