I wanna do some upgrading without buying a new mobo. I have memory and a cpu picked out so far. I'm a little confused about a gpu though. I have the 680i board with x16 pci express. Will a card made for x16 2.0 work on my board? | ||

Unless you get a GTX470 I doubt you'll really see any kind of bottle necking, but they are all backwards compatible to start with so you could still get that 470 and it would work. What kind of card were you thinking of getting? More to the point, I think your biggest concern would be a beefy power supply - have you thought about this in regards to your upgrading? I usually want to keep mine above the peak wattage by about 200-300 watts for some breathing room when upgrades come around. Edited Thu Aug 19 2010, 10:31PM |

Affirmative, good buddy ;) Yeah, I have a 2.0 card that I used forever on my old 1.0 mobo. Now that I have a new system, i'm getting the full yahooie outta that card. heh heh. Point to consider when buying a gpu: the Memory Interface "bit-rate". I would suggest any card that is a 256-bit or higher. While 128-bit cards will play games well enough, you're stuck with lower refresh rates and may not be able to get the higher resolutions that your monitor supports. I have a Powercolor ATi HD4850 1Gb. It devours games. Of course, I had to put some memory heat sinks on the otherwise superb card, but it's been great playing all the game that are out. When new it cost $199. It's now only $99. That's a huge steal and is an excellent bang for you buck. I wouldn't be able to give you any headsup on nVidia cards right now. Someone else may have some insight into that. You should compare cards on this awesome benchmark wepage: [-link-] My card is 29th on the high end list. Just two months ago it was 13th before all the latest cards were released. |

I was looking at a GTX465. I have considered a PSU and I currently have a large enough PSU according to this calculator [-link-] but I've had it for a few years so maybe I should upgrade that as well. I haven't done this for awhile and tech moves so damn fast that everytime I look into this stuff I feel like a total noob. |

Well HK, my only question about the psu...who made it and what model is it? If you do decide to upgrade the PSU remember this...but you've probably already heard me say something like it before. If I had a choice on getting an absolutely insane PSU (1.5KWatts) that could fit in my tower, or a 2 video cards top of the line...I'd rather get the PSU, it'll last me (if I'm good to it)...well it'll last till you have upgrades that need more power. Which could be a very long time indeed. A video card will last maybe 3 years tops, before software eclipses the card and you start feeling your FPS drop considerably. So it pays to really splurge on a good quality psu from a top vendor like PCP&C, Enermax, Silverstone, Tagan etc. Edited Fri Aug 20 2010, 01:33AM |

Interesting mines at 716watts about...so I'm right at the sweet spot still to allow for upgrades =) at least when I do upgrade...which won't be for awhile since I just did that... [-link-] website actually has a review on my psu too...which sadly isn't sold anymore...it was replaced by the 1.1KWatt model. sorta off topic: Man I'm looking at their high wattage model...some dude is seeking litigation against Enermax because they won't honor an $80 rebate, he's apparently or was rather a long time fan of them, and this somehow necessitates a 1 gold egg review...I'm seriously going to write a blog about people who do stupid ass reviews like this...review the product not the rebate.... I agree with you about stupid reviews but customer service is a big part of sales. Too big I think. Put more time and resources into making a good product than customer service; that's how I feel. I know customer service is necessary but you can reduce the need of that if you spend more on QC. | ||

Yeah I think the other comments section is where you should warn a potential buyer about customer service. And you have a really good psu. 5 year warranty is as long as you can get it these days...I wouldn't bother upgrading till you start running out of spare wattage... Edited Fri Aug 20 2010, 03:27AM |
