"Firstly, we learn via Twitter from DICE rendering architect Johann Andersson the engine BF3 is built on -- Frostbite 2.0 -- is "primarily developed for DirectX 11"; XP and DX9 won't be supported (though you may be able to hack it). Also the engine will be especially optmized for 64-bit...since consoles only support DX9, the implication is the PC version will be a "true" PC game."

be ready to throw your 10 year old OS away.

from steam user group survey:

you can see windows 7 32 and 64bit dominate even though XP 32bit is 1st place.  the second percentage number is the change or adoption rate from the last survey, XP is down while win7 is up.

Windows XP 32 bit
31.49%
-1.24%

Windows 7 64 bit
29.62%
+1.38%

Windows Vista 32 bit
13.22%
-0.49%

Windows 7
12.82%
+0.40%

Windows Vista 64 bit
6.81%
+0.09%

My rig is prepared for this game already. By the gods, I hope they don't get gimicky with BF3 like they did with BC2 and the new MoH. Just make the game like the old Desert Combat and let everyone enjoy the massive mayhem of an actual battlefield.

Just read a very nice article that clears up a good bit. It appears they will try and go back to larger maps with 64 players and to the classic battlefield feel. This is great news as no one wants another BC2. Speaking of BC2, did you notice that EA Store is selling BC2 for the PC on sale this weekend at just under $18.

Anyway, the article is here:  http://bf3nation.com/2010/08/frostbite-2-engine-good-news-for-pc-gamers/ Edited Mon Sept 06 2010, 12:32AM

I'm still a bit skeptical. They promised a lot of things with BC2 and things like free maps, game changing content being free, not being a port, and the promise of mod tools, demo recorders, none of these ever happened. Remember when they said they didn't want to divide the community with an expansion pack?

I'm going to let this game have time to saturate the market before I break open my wallet.

I hear ya. I think we'll have a good idea on how its going to be once beta gameplay videos start leaking probably later this year. BF3 is the only game I'd spend the money on for a new PC. by the time it releases, octo-core CPUs should be out. which is probably what I'll wait to upgrade to. I still have a little faith in dice/ea, they did a good job on BF2, and a decent job on 2142. Edited Tue Sept 07 2010, 05:27AM

Well we all knew that we would have to upgrade a some point. I've been compiling a list of upgrades anyway and Win7 is on that list. Just more reason to get at asap.
