This is a story of the three laptops I owned for the last week. First off I'm back in school, so I thought a laptop would do me some good. I took a trip to Best Buy last Thursday to see what they had. They offered a pretty decent selection, but very few had what I was looking for. I was hoping for, at least, an i5 processor and an independent GPU. After narrowing it down to two laptops I ended up lowering my standards a bit and chose one with an i3 instead of the i5, but it did have an nVIDIA 310m GPU and four gigs of ram. Not bad, I thought. I can do some light gaming on this and my homework. It was an ASUS UL80 notebook. The brushed aluminum exterior is damn sexy and the 14" screen was big enough for me. I got it home, unpacked it, fired it up and went to work burning recovery discs. No problems. Then I went to work installing updates. No problems. Then I noticed it. A dead pixel almost dead center. Damn. I was willing to live with it though. After the discs finished I decided to update the drivers for the GPU. Bad idea. I've done this hundreds of times on my desktop pc and have never had this happen. Upon restart my little ASUS locked up at the desktop. Uh oh. I stood on the power button and restarted in safe mode. I found the check point before the driver install and restarted from there in safe mode again. A message popped up stating the the check point restart was successful, so I restarted it normally and...lockup again. This time, as I was staring at the screen trying to burn a hole through it with the fire shooting from my eyes, I saw another dead pixel. frak it. The next day I drove back to Best Buy, told them there were two dead pixels and exchanged it. Since I already had discs made I was able to skip this step with the new laptop. I installed all the windows updates, BUT did not bother with the nVIDIA driver until I was able to find some information about it online. Too bad I can't get online. It won't connect. Clicking the troubleshooter found a fix for me; the wireless device was not turned on. Weird, but oh well. So I start cruising the web and blamo. I lose connection again. Troubleshooter offers the same fix. Getting pissed again. Oh did I mention that I found another dead pixel on this one? This damn thing was constantly kicking me offline. I didn't have time to get to Best Buy over the weekend so I just set it aside. After school on Monday I drove to Best Buy and explained the problem. The geek there did a bunch of screwing around on it in an attempt to get kicked offline. It didn't happen of course, but he did find an error log that showed I had been getting booted so he believed me. It was then that I pointed out the dead pixel as well and he went to get me another one. Most people would've said to hell with it by now. Not me. I'm Swiss. I do things the hard way. I get ASUS number three home and unbox it. I don't even bother to take the plastic coverings off of it this time. I just turn it on and start doing all the updating again. I'm waiting to get kicked offline. It happens. Troubleshooter does the same thing, but this time the laptop automatically downloaded and installed a driver for the ethernet connection! WTF!? It was as plain as day on my screen with that little message telling me this. Ok. Fine. I spent three days playing around on it with the plastic still on it without any issues. I'm feeling pretty good now, so I took the plastic off of the screen. Guess what I see. That's right folks. Another dead pixel in the same frak spot! frak YOU ASUS! I boxed it back up, drove to Best Buy and asked for a refund today. By the way, I never even took it to school. The End |

thats wild. with laptops, its best to avoid the consumer class and get a business class laptop. they are built better and generally more reliable. you also have access to business tech support, which is usually not in India/
Pakistan. my brother got a dell vostro, which is the low end of the business class laptops. 15", 4gb, 320gb HD, intel i5, nvidia 320m, for $640 from the dell business site, prices change everyday. has a finger print reader as well but thats the only thing on it that's crap. personal ly for laptops I prefer macbooks, the multitouch trackpad gestures blow away anything a PC laptop's trackpad can do. they help speed up work flow so much. if you plan on gaming on a laptop though, just avoid macs because it won't be a good gaming experience. I have an ASUS laptop and I have never had any issues. I think the only difference though is I bought my laptop from Newegg. They had a similar gaming laptop from bestbuy but I like newegg better for the price and also I don't really like bestbuy because they load a bunch of crap on it. Sorry for your experience but I love my ASUS laptop and I have had it about 2 years now.

That's horrible HK. I'm sorry you had so many problems. That's another good reason to never goto Best Buy. Hate them. I lost faith in Asus when two mobo's I bought from them stopped working after a years time each. *sigh* I hope you are able to find something out there that won't break on you :/ I have an Acer Aspire laptop that has been great. I got it from the pawn shop I worked at a few years ago. Two owners and it's still in tip top shape...zero dead pixels. You should consider Acer. They passed Dell for number two briefly last month. |

I'm not pissed at BestBuy. It's not their fault. They were actually really good about this. I can always delete the software they install. I'm not sure I'll even look at another laptop for awhile. I'm not soured on them, I just really don't have the need that I thought I had.
