I seem to remember Air really loving the original BioShock. Well, Steam has it for $5 right now, so I've purchased it and am downloading it now. I saw a tv commercial for BioShock 2 and it looked pretty cool. So, I'm hoping this original one is worth the hefty five bucks ;) | ||

I was able to play it the night I bought it. Since then, it keeps crashing my computer before I can even get into the game. I was able to play a minute or two today by going into windowed mode and disabling DX 10, but I'm still getting some D3D compiler error that crashes it out after a minute or two. Ugh! I'm going to reinstall DirectX and see if that helps since during install this game installed DX on it's own. Maybe it got corrupted. Dunno though. So far, it's turning out to be the worst $5 I've ever spent. It even crashed some other programs too. Doh! And what's really bad is that I can't find a decently quick download of DX anywhere. Wth? Took about 30 minutes to get a 100mb file. pfft. |

Fast, did you already verify the game files through steam? Or download the latest drivers for your graphics card? Or just reinstall the game itself? | ||

I bought the game through Steam, installed it through Steam, and Launched it through Steam :P Yep, I have the absolute latest drivers for my card though I will probably reinstall them tonight if the game still doesn't work. As for reinstalling the game, it's a directdownload from Steam. I'm not sure the download files remained after I did the install. I might have to wait for the download again...and that took 3 hours because Steam's download servers are the suck right now. I'll try my game again tonight after work and see if all is well. |

Well, like I said, try verifying the game files through steam. Sometimes that works. Right click Bioshock, properties, local files tab, then verify integrity of game cache. I've had that fix my problems before. No guarentee, but it's worth a shot. | ||

I tried the verify content like you said. It verified just fine. I even defragmented the cache later. But neither worked. I uninstalled and reinstalled the graphics drivers, but it's a no go. I was going to uninstall the game and re-install, but it doesn't work that way. You have to delete the entire download. It even warns that if I want to reinstall that I'll have to download the game all over again. Ugh! The error is always the same though. It's the D3DCompiler_33. dll file. What I'm going to do now is find that file and rename it to _oldD3D33 or something. Then I'm going to yet again reinstall Direct3D. Last chance before I uninstall the game and call it a wash. |

Don't give up on it, Fast. I'll do some looking around to see what I can find out. We're gonna get this game working one way or another. What is the error you get as soon as you crash? And does it just throw you out to the desktop? Edited Thu Jan 07 2010, 06:37AM |

I appreciate the help Mooch. The game just freezes. So far, it's only happened during the loading screens...you know where it shows some quotes while showing pictures while you wait for it to bring up the next part of the game. Usually, it won't even let me control alt del when it freezes. I just have to press my reset button to restart the computer. On the times that I have been able to cntrl alt del, it's had the close program dialog box open. In the details, it's the d3dcompiler_33. dll with the problem and that's a DX file. I'm on a 64-bit vista machine, btw. 3gb ram. 4850 Ati card. Edited Thu Jan 07 2010, 12:21PM |

Seems a ton of people have problems with this game. Ah well. I did find an apparent fix though as it hasn't crashed since I've done this. But I had to adjust the startup shortcut to force DX9 and also set the compatibiilty mode to xpsp2. I tested it last night and just played it some now and it hasn't crashed. At least I didn't experience the audio problems that huge amounts of people had with this game. I don't think I'll buy anything by 2K anymore. I had considered their baseball game this past year, but so many people were complaining about it that I decided not to get it. Now, with this horrible experience with BioShock, even though I did get the game to work, I can't imagine putting my faith in this companies games by spending hard earned money on them. But that's okay. There's plenty of good games coming out this next year. 3 weeks til STO :) |
