Alright so a few of you have been telling me you really miss me on TS...there is a good reason for that...apart from being really frak busy...I nearly died along with my GF, her brother, and her cousin's fiance. First off the boring shit...my gf was moving into her classroom for her second year of teaching 2nd Grade...and I had to help her set her room up... Then I had to start getting ready for my own education...I'm starting college on the 23rd of this month...so I've been busy trying to get myself set up for classes. I've also been spending a lot of time with my gf's cousins and usually we stay up late so when I get home I'm too tired to even play games... But the other reason... 2 and half weeks ago...my VW 2000 Jetta was giving me problems...it's a really crap car, that's built in Mexico and I got it just before the strike at the VW Mexico plant...so I'm pretty sure my car got the "I just don't care if it's done right" treatment. Anyway, for years this car has had over heating problems, A/C problems, power steering issues, suspension issues, a collapsed lifter in the engine. It really is a lemon of lemons. Anyway 2 and half weeks ago, I'm getting off the highway while driving my gf, her brother and her cousin's fiancee to a sushi bar, and I'm about to start slowing down my speed for the red light, when my brakes stop working. They locked up and worse still they wouldn't engage either, I was careening for a T-Bone soon as I hit the intersection going about 45+ and I couldn't slow down. I start moving to the far right lane and realize that my power steering has once again also left me. Great, I tell everyone hold on. And soon after going through about 8 possible scenarios, I decide to crank up the emergency brake as hard as I can and start putting everything I had into a right turn at the intersection. (No cars had started coming yet, or I would just tried to jump the curb.) My tires scream but amazingly I slowed us down rapid quick and had to get a push into the gas station that was on that corner. Disaster averted. I turn off the car, everyone congratulates me on how calm I was, and mysteriously, the car works fine after I turn it back on...we drive to the sushi bar, have a good laugh, and I drive everyone home...car seemed to behave after that... Later the next day I take it in to get it fixed; both control arms were broken, among other things...and 2 days after I picked it up again, the car does it to me again, this time the engine also cuts off when I brake (and my brakes also lock up for moments at a time, and my power steering also cuts out). I managed to drive/drag it home, and tell my dad over the phone once I'm safe at my place that I need to get a replacement car as I don't feel safe driving this one anymore. The Jetta now when I turn it on starts smoking and the smell of gas is rampant, I think the car has had it...I'm going to give it to the auction here probably this week, or burn it. Now with the scary bit over, me and my gf start car shopping. I managed to get a sweet Toyota 2006 Limited 4Runner with 45k miles on it. I checked out reliable cars and this one got a great rating in that department (same as the Honda CR-V). I'll get pictures soon...very pleased with this car and I got a good price on it...after I did some haggling. Anyw ay...all this excitement has left me drained in the evenings. Glad to hear you're safe, man. That sounds like one hell of an ordeal. It really speaks to your character that you can remain calm, composed and actively calculating in such a scenario. Not many people have the nerves to do that. -Moose |

wow, good thing the emergency brake worked. its a little funny you got a toyota after having brake problems. 45k miles, that should be a good car to ya. toyota's are good cars though. | ||

lol yeah, I did check about that, the 4Runner never had problems with the sticky gas pedal or floor mat entrapment. Not to mention the only cars affected by the gas pedal were ones built here in the states. No 4runner's are built here - mine has a J starting on the VIN. |

I'm sure glad you and the rest are safe after all that. I think we've all seen those caught on camera moments where someone flies through an intersection and has a huge, fatal wreck. You did right by choosing to get rid of that thing. An auto salvage place might be a good place to make a bit of cash off of it. I certainly wouldn't sell it for anyone else to drive though. You'd feel a bit guilty if someone else got dead driving it, I'm sure. hehe. Yeah, Toyota has been good in the past. They've had many problems of late. You'll want to check for recalls on the particular car you've chosen. I did that with the 2005 GMC Canyon and found that a recent recall had been done conerning the brake lights. That's a mighty fine link there Fast, I've bookmarked it for future reference. Well it looks like I may need to get some stuff relabeled. apa rt from that, it looks like the link agrees that I did get a good deal on it. I can tell a few things about the owner, they had one flat (the tools for it look to be used only once), the interior leather and other things were well taken care of, I'm guessing the driver was female who had a job that necessitated heels ...the driver side floor mat has a hole worn into it where the gas pedal resides, I've never been able to do that in 10 years with my old car. But I'm going for black rubber replacements anyway because I expect to do some camping in some remote places with it. I also bought a trailer hitch, and some xenon hid bulbs for increased night visibility. Once I get them and install them I'll take the pictures. Edited Tue Aug 17 2010, 06:42AM |
